Once Upon a Life
Once Upon a life, there lived a young boy who played and played and played
Even though his days seemed to last forever, Nightime still managed to find it's way to him
And even though Nightime robbed him of his playtime He still liked this time of night,
this time that comforted him and let him rest,so that he could begin the next day's plan of play
He played innocently and he was best at pretending
Sometimes he ruled his world in play
,And sometimes he was his father or mother,
and sometimes he was just another person,
or animal or thing or adult or child or soldier,
or sometimes he could just do special things,
Like fly or float or be tall or strong,
or be the best football player in the world...
And the world would be very, very impressed with this little boy who liked so much to play
And strangely it seemed very important to this boy that the world was impressed!
This innocent little boy in his innocent little way became older,
and knew he'd need to rely on pretending
He knew it was time to pretend to be a man,
because the world told him it was time,
and he always listened
He played innocently and he was best at pretending
He looked at men and looked and looked and practiced and practiced and practiced,
and because he was best at pretending, he seemed a man
He pretended and practiced away the innocence
Because men certainly were not innocent,
They were strong & reliable & big & independent,
and they were the protectors, the soldiers, the leaders, the Kings!
The world mistook him for a man,
For he was best at pretending,
But this was a much different kind of game
And "once upon a life" began to change
There seemed to be less & less Playtime during his day
and the days did not last for ever any more
and Nightime became a welcome relief,
for days that now seemed to hurt, like prickles
And then something VERY strange happened,
One day he realized he was no longer pretending...to be a man and became one
and realized he was not pretending to lose innocence but, indeed, had lost it
He was no longer as good at pretending as he was and he thought much less about doing special things,
and the world didn't seemed terribly impressed with him and he knew what it was to not be a little boy
And it was a hard, painful knowledge to bear And it is a hard, painful knowledge to bear
Once upon a life there lived a little boy, who pretended to be a man, then became one,
He never pretended to be a father, but became one anyway, because sometimes that happens to some men,
And this father had a little boy who loved to play and play and play,
and this little boy was best at a lot of things, especially pretending,...and his days lasted forever......
