He Wouldn't Hurt a Fly
Surely you have heard this comment before. Or perhaps you have known a person so gentle and in tune with life forces and with the sanctity of life itself, that you have described him as "so gentle he wouldn't hurt a fly"! Those people are rare and they are special. As the family was enjoying swimming at the inlet in Sebastian, I noticed my son Lukas leaving the deep end of the water. His steps were slow and measured as he walked against the natural current of the ocean. I watched him finally make shore where he traveled another 40 yards or so. It appeared that he placed something in the brush. He then slowly made his way back into water and returned to where he had originally been. The total round trip excursion was perhaps 20 minutes. I finally made my way to him and asked why he went ashore and then returned. He simply stated that he was returning an ant, which he found struggling for life in the water, back to land where he would be safe. Immediately after his matter-of-fact comment. he went about resuming the pleasures of the day swimming and rafting. "Amazing", I thought to myself..."that he would take so much time out just to rescue a little ant". At first I thought he was being a little silly. Then I felt prideful that he was so in tune with life's energy & spirit as to end the suffering and save the life of this little creature.
In their own right these gentle people are themselves, heroes. We go out of our way to praise and honor our young folk for going to war, protecting our rights and liberties, our country. And rightfully so. They do make a sacrifice and we should give them our thanks.
But what of the gentle people of our world. Those who defend the weak, not with guns and bullets, but with gentle actions and comforting words. Heck, if we had enough of these people, we wouldn't need to send anyone to war to "kill for us"! Somehow I knew even at his birth that his middle name should be "Peace". I love my son and am very proud of him!
